Life: A concept unique (of our knowledge) to this world. It flourishes in the smallest of creatures, beings of molecular size that go about living unseen to the common eye, and it blooms in the largest of creatures like the elephants that lord over the plains and the beasts that once reigned this land, now long extinct. In this world, a creature became by the name of Man and the child of Man was curious in many ways. When the child saw this concept of life in the ant that clambered over the rocks like great mountains, he asked Man, “How small this creature is, am I better than it? For I am much larger, much more intelligent.” Man said yes, but the heart said no. The heart cried out, “All life is worthwhile, even in this small critter.” So the child pressed on. Again, he saw this concept of life in the green trees that grew in the forest, their branches twisting towards the sun, and as they passed, Man felled the tree to clear the land for housing for other Man. Curious, the child asked, “How full of life this tree was, with it’s dancing leaves and the insects and animals that lived inside. Are we more important than it?” Again, Man said yes, but the heart said no. It cried, “Every breath of life, be it plant, insect, or Man, is a miracle, none more important than the other.” Finally, life approached once more, this time in the form of other Man, but this Man looked different, thought different than the Man the child knew and the child asked, “How unlike us this Man is, is he different than we?” One last time, the Man said yes, “Look at his skin, it is a different shade. Look at his shape, it is unlike our own. Look at his thoughts, they differ from ours.” but one last time, the heart said no. Crying out once more, it said, “Look at his heart, it beats the same as I. Look at his soul, it loves the same as I. There is no difference between you and him. Both are human at the core.” With this, the child let love fill his heart and he challenged the ideals of Man, trusting instead, the concept of life.
